April 2014: After our hike to Panama, we decided to hike in the other direction out of Capurganá towards the south. We were told there is a wonderful beach called Playa El Aguacate that is about a one hour walk. So we put on our bathing suits and our water shoes, grabbed the towels and beach toys and headed out.
The walk along the rocky coast was spectacular. The jungle reaches all the way to the ocean. The only thing missing was the sunshine.
We had to climb and descend two pretty steep hills jutting out in to the ocean but the kids were determined and had no difficulty with the rocky terrain.
We passed several empty beaches with covered palapas.
Finally we reached Playa El Aguacate. There were several buildings and some people who were camping in tents. The beach itself was unimpressive – sandy but as you move out into the water, it was very rocky. Good thing for those water shoes! But there were several beautiful large trees and a grassy area where we could sit in the shade. The water was refreshing after the hike so we all went in.
Roger took the kids snorkeling, but Aiden could not get comfortable with the snorkel so he just used the mask. They loved seeing all the fish, especially the cuttlefish. Aiden called them “little squids”.
One of the local fisherman brought this large crab on shore to see if someone would buy it.
Along with all the wonderful fish we saw in the water, we also found lots of beautiful shells along the rocky shoreline.
After a morning of hiking, swimming, snorkeling, and hunting for seashells, we were hungry for lunch. What’s on the menu? Fish, of course!
As it got later in the day, we decided not to hike back.
A lancha arrived with some Colombians from Medellín and we asked if we could ride back to Capurganá with them.
Overall a wonderful day spent at a remote beach.
